Breckenridge Colorado Summer Elopement
Mountain Handfasting Ceremony
When Liz first contacted me she explained that her and Jason’s wedding was being postponed because of Covid. They wanted to celebrate but were unsure how they wanted to proceed. The only thing they did know was that they wanted to get married this year and they wanted a Colorado Elopement in a beautiful mountain setting. She did a little research into elopement ceremonies and found handfasting. Handfasting is an ancient Celtic wedding ritual that has its roots in Irelands thousands of years ago. I personally knew about handfasting from my travels in Scotland and general love of British history. I was so excited when Liz told me they had chosen this unique tradition to celebrate their marriage.
Blue Lake, Breckenridge, Colorado
After a little searching, I suggested to Liz and Jason to use an amazing spot in Breckenridge, Blue Lake, for their Colorado Elopement. The couple drove from New Mexico and met me bright and early in the morning to capture this special moment.
Colorado Elopement Handfasting Ceremony
Liz & Jason brought with them silk ribbon’s gifted and passed down from their parents to fast their hands. First, they took turns reading their vows to each other before laughing their way through figuring out the special tie needed to fast their hands. After the fasting of the hands Liz & Jason, the bride and groom, pull their hands apart and the ribbon or chord that has been wrapped ends up tying a knot in the middle. The amazing setting around them really added to this special for me. I felt like I was in another world watching this special and ancient ceremony between two people. It was such a joy to be part of.
After their ceremony, Liz and Jason and myself hiked around the lake and surrounding area to capture some amazing photos in this rugged beauty. This is now one of my favorite spots in Colorado. From the lake, to a waterfall and incredible mountain views- what’s not to love? Some times I can’t believe how lucky I am to live and work in this beautiful place. I couldn’t think of a better spot or ask for a more beautiful day for these two!
